Hold the yardstick to the line, and run the utility knife or glass cutter along the yardstick to score the sheet. Repeat the step 3 about 10 to 15 times to deeper the score in the plexiglass. Flip over the plexiglass and score on its opposite side as well. Now hold the scribed line to the edge of your working table.
Step 2: Buffing. You will need an electric drill here as well as a buffing pad. Apply a polishing compound, one that has been formulated for plastic, to the edge of the plexiglass. Use your drill and buffing pad to bring the edge of the plexiglass to a near-perfect polish. This step requires time and patience.
There' a pretty inexpensive blade at HD for doing finishing cuts, lots of teeth, and no rake. The other thing I recommend is to wax the blade, which will help keep the heat down. Cast acrylic is definitely the best, but if it is for a sump, the extruded acrylic ( plexiglass) by GE plastics at 1/4" worked real well on my sump. My2c.

Make sure Plexi is in temp range of 65-100 degrees F, if cold plexi is more likely to crack or spider. Spray plexi with warm tap water, just a heavy misting on plexi NOT soaking (remember electricity and water) The water will keep the blade cool. Make sure saw is [unpluged] reverse blade, eye & ear protection a must.
